Volker Poelzl, born and raised in Salzburg, Austria, is a long-time expatriate and world traveler. His travels have taken him to 35 countries on four continents, and he still continues to explore remote destinations around the globe. He has had a long interest in writing, and a student exchange in Brazil in the mid 1990s inspired him to write his first travel article for Transitions Abroad. Since then Volker has published articles in several publications, and he has been a Contributing Editor on Living Abroad at Transitions Abroad magazine since 2000. He is the author of Culture Shock! Brazil: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette (Culture Shock! Guides) and Culture Shock! Portugal: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette (Culture Shock! Guides) , and has written extensively about ecotourism, responsible travel, and about living in foreign countries. In the past decade Volker’s main travel destination has been the Amazon, where he spent nearly two years as a traveler, ecotourism consultant and participant in a private agro-forestry project. Some of his goals for the near future are to write a book about the Amazon and to buy his own piece of jungle to protect it from destruction.
Volker currently lives in Tucson, Arizona, but he travels frequently in search of new experiences and writing material. He can be reached at volkerpoelzl@cox.net.
