Volunteering in rural South Africa — school support
Although close to the popular tourist site of Addo Elephant Park, the town of Nomathamsanqa is one of the country's most deprived communities. The local school is at its heart, providing essential education despite minimal resources.
Many of the teachers are qualified and professional, and are keen to improve their teaching skills. As well as the need for educators and learners to develop their English literacy, the school’s principal has highlighted the following needs:
- quality educational materials are seldom available
- lesson planning and teaching methodologies — these are fundamental areas of modern education in which many teachers have received no training
- Information Technology — while AV Bukani has computers, computer literacy among teachers cannot be taken as read
- sports, arts and crafts practitioners are needed to work with the children to build confidence and enhance life-skills
Teachers do their best in what are challenging circumstances — often just need a bit of support and encouragement, and this is where volunteers can make a truly meaningful and mutually rewarding contribution

Volunteering in urban South Africa — health and social care
Working with a grassroots community project in the townships of Nelson Mandela Bay, volunteers can share their skills with local staff and volunteers in the Emmanuel Care and Advice Centre (EACC). The team includes many unpaid volunteers, and continues to build an effective, caring, learning organization which now directly supports over 1300 adults and children.
EACC has more than 30 care givers, each of whom currently visits approximately 80 homes where the families are affected by HIV/AIDS. Drawn from the community, the carers are the backbone of support for the families they visit – providing education on positive living and prevention, helping with referrals to relevant support agencies – and perhaps most importantly, listening, offering love and care, encouraging and helping the people they meet who are in need.
The EACC is constantly trying to support more people, and has a wide range of programmes which include a home based care programme, counselling and education initiatives, support groups, a feeding programme, a crèche for pre-school children, and support for OVCs (orphans and vulnerable children).
The project’s needs are broad, and a corresponding breadth of volunteer skills and interests is always welcome — health care, life skills, administration, child care and development ... and more!

Volunteering in urban South Africa — schools support
This project in the township schools of Nelson Mandela Bay involves far more than teaching! The programme currently involves working with the staff and children of 7 primary schools, formally providing education for children from the ages of 4 to13 — from Reception to Grade 7. However, many children have their education interrupted for various socio-economic reasons, resulting in classes where the children’s ages differ considerably from that of the official Grade. This is particularly true of two of the schools, where children up to the age of 17 are still attempting to achieve the required level for their primary school certificate, without which they cannot attend high school.
The schools involved in this project have been identified for their innovation and dynamism. Previous volunteers observe repeatedly that — despite the deprivation — they are joyful places to work, where the vast majority of teachers are professional and committed, and the children are eager to learn.
