Articles on Teaching English in Mexico
English and Living in Mexico by Jonathan
...I was still looking for a job. I had long
thought about trying to live overseas and
I knew that teaching English was a good vehicle
for doing so, so I enrolled in a 1-month
crash course in Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL) to figure out
how to do it.
Not long after I completed my course I came
across a posting on the Web for a university
English teaching job in Oaxaca. So I sent
in my resume, completed a phone interview,
accepted the job, and got on a plane to Mexico
all in the span of about ten days...
English as a Foreign Language in Guadalajara,
Mexico by Emily Miner
It was a lot of work—140 hours of work, in
my case—but you finally have your degree!
After returning home, I interviewed for a
job teaching young children in a progressive
childcare center. When they found out that
I had been teaching in Mexico, they offered
me the job immediately and decided to add
teaching Spanish to my duties. TEFL gives
you concrete job skills like public speaking,
lesson preparation, and working with others.
But it also taught me how to be more culturally
Teaching in Mexico as a Freelancer by
Each school is quite different and they complement
each other well. Mornings I teach at the
Anglo, a small language school near my house.
This morning I had two classes. The first
were four people in their 20s and 30s who
come to class before work. They are eager
to learn and always participate. The second
class has a few housewives and a few students
who go to work later in the day, including
a professional guitarist. Like the first
class, these students want to speak more
than anything else...
English and Live in Chiapas by Lisa
I am an English teacher in Chiapas, Mexico.
Most of these children have never seen a
5'5" pale-skinned white woman with freckles,
red hair and blue eyes—except on television—and
they seem to be mesmerized, if not slightly
frightened, by the sighting. At the end of
day one, they line up to kiss me on the cheek
before saying goodbye. One little girl with
the bouncy curly brown hair whispers in my
ear "you have beautiful eyes," before
she scurries out the door to join her friends...
a Job Teaching English in Mexico City
in One Week by Andy Peloquin
Did you know that you could get a teaching
job within just one week of arriving in Mexico
You can arrive in Mexico City with no experience,
no idea of what to do, and nothing more than
your personal items, and you will be employed
within a week—provided you know how and where
to look for good English teaching jobs. I
arrived in Mexico City with a family of four.
No idea of how or where to live. One week
later, I had a steady job that lasted for
18 months and paid more than enough to cover
my living expenses...
