From the Publisher This time our emphasis is on short-term jobs abroad--where they are and where to get them. While we focus on this every January, this year short-term work seems especially topical. Ironically, as the U.S. economy continues to strengthen and unemployment declines, more Americans are looking for employment abroad. In his new book, Escape from America, Roger Gallo claims that “for the first time in America’s history it is easier to make more money outside of America than in America.” While we’re not certain this is true, we do know that we’re receiving lots of orders for Work Abroad as well as frequent calls from the weekly news magazines asking for information about the overseas job market. One overseas job available to any native speaker is teaching conversational English. For “Teaching Jobs Abroad” (page 55) Anthony Hand and Work Abroad Editor Bill Nolting surveyed the major employment agencies for English teachers and report on how to arrange a job before you leave home. Susan Griffith (page 41) lists employers around the world where travelers can pick up jobs as they go. The ESL Program Directory (page 65) lists schools in the U.S. abroad where would-be English teachers can receive training and agencies that arrange jobs. Next time our double focus is on planning a summer vacation to fit your special interests and budget and academic programs abroad. Happy New Year and Happy Transitions!
