From the Publisher

This fall we reluctantly said good-bye to Jason Whitmarsh, who has gone west to become a full-time writer, and welcome to David Cline, another writer who has moved east to become our new managing editor and publicist.

During his three-year tenure, Jason put our 20-year store of practical information on study, work, and independent travel onto one database and from it compiled two important resource books--the Alternative Travel Directory and Work Abroad--and launched our web site, www.transitionsabroad.com.

David, himself a world traveler, is passionate about helping answer the questions of those who are preparing to go abroad and providing those who have just returned with current knowledge that will inspire them to venture out again as soon as the opportunity arises.

One way that Transitions Abroad will now get more travel and learning information to more travelers is through our new electronic newsletter, TA News, edited by Ruth Sylte. The newsletter, which will go to subscribers who request it at the same time as each issue of the magazine goes to press, will highlight new opportunities for study, short-term work, internship and volunteer placements, and educational travel (see page 79).

This time in Transitions Abroad the focus is on traveling responsibly; that is, as one who appreciates and respects the people and environment of the host country. Deborah McLaren has assembled an extensive list of current resources for the responsible traveler (page 43). Much of what she has written in Transitions Abroad about how to avoid the destructive effects of travel can be found in her new book, Rethinking Tourism (excerpted on page 37).

Next time our focus is on round-the-world travel and how to pay for it, including finding the best deals as well as short-term jobs.
