CELTA: A One-Month Intensive Course Prepares You to Teach English Abroad
A 1-month intensive CELTA course is a fabulous way to find out if you’re cut out for teaching, and it gives you something to bargain with when you start job hunting.
An intensive CELTA really will get you teaching and quickly. Expect a punishing schedule of four weeks’ hard labor. From 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday you are expected to attend class. Miss even one day and you risk failing the course.
Every morning will be devoted to theory. You learn how to be a teacher and study the English language. You can bet your life you don’t know much about either.
Theory might seem like a big waste of time until you realize that everything you learn in the morning, you use in the afternoon. Every afternoon, from the very first day, you will be teaching.
The first week the tutors give copious instructions to help you. By the final week you choose your own subject or language points and devise your own lessons without guidance. Tutors avoid giving you help during your lessons, unless things become incredibly bad. When you’re teaching you’re on your own.
Your 40-minute lessons will be observed by your tutor and your fellow trainees. (In our course we had a trainee CELTA tutor too.)
At the end of each lesson you’ve taught you are required to assess how well you achieved your aims and objectives. After this, the tutor will preside over group feedback on your class and will let you know if you have passed or failed your lesson. There are no secrets on a CELTA.
As with every course, there are the usual homework assignments and tutorials. The CELTA also requires that you observe trained teachers in action. One month and not a few headaches later you’ll be a teacher.
So what are you waiting for? Update your CV and get out there.
