Responsible Travel Programs
Traveling responsibly means respecting the natural and cultural environment of the places we visit, taking the time to appreciate the importance of what others have to tell us. People-to-people travel has perhaps never been more important than now.

The organizers whose tours and programs are described here have pledged to make travel a learning experience–not another form of consumption–that benefits the host as well as the visitor. Learn from experienced teachers about the sacred traditions of Asia or the natural history of the Galapagos Islands; learn from South Africans about their economic, political, and social realities; work with leading scientists on field research projects worldwide. . . .

Ecotravel Reports
Throughout the world, local communities are taking charge of their own tourism rather than putting themselves and their environment in the hands of outsiders. Ron Mader talks with Chris Shaw about community-based tourism on the Mexico-Guatemala border and describes family-run ecotourism in Ecuador.
Chris Humphrey takes us to a nature refuge in Honduras.

Responsible Travel Resources
Deborah McLaren and Ron Mader have updated their annual selection of the best information sources on Responsible Travel and Ecotourism. This year they have included their current list of favorite Responsible Ecotour Operator.

From the Publisher

As we prepare to go to press less than two weeks after the attacks we are still, like so many others, in a state of near shock. Next time our editors–all of whom seem to agree that violence only leads to greater violence and that travel is, as Rick Steves says, “a huge unifier, perhaps more important than ever”–will offer a practical guide to travel in the post-September 11 world. Meanwhile, here are some early responses. More of their “Travel Now!” comments are scattered throughout this issue.

We invite your thoughts on how best to travel responsibly in light of recent events and your recommendations of specific organizations and programs that support mind- and soul-expanding travel, the focus of this and every issue.

–Dr. Clay Hubbs

“My big fear–and the consensus I feel among Italians and fellow countrymen here on the road–is that America will respond to this tragedy by seeking revenge. Passions combined with 21st-century weaponry makes such a frightening mix that it's too dangerous for any nation to act as the 'world's only superpower. We are a family of nations.”

–Rick Steves
Riomaggiore, Italy (Budget Travel Editor)

“People are understandably worried on a practical level, but they must know that increased security will make air travel over the coming months and years far safer than it has ever been.
