Student Participant Report
University Study in Thailand
By Carool Kersten
Thailands first private institution for higher education, Payap Univ., located in Chiang Mai, maintains an international orientation.
Last year over 50 foreign students from 18 different countries were either attending one of our special programs or pursuing regular undergraduate studies, says Peggy Imai of the Universitys Office of International Programs, which coordinates study and research opportunities for students and scholars from abroad.
Currently, Payap Univ. is offering two programs specifically designed for overseas students: Intensive Thai language courses, taught at three levels, start eight times a year. The more extensive semester-long Thai Studies Certificate Program includes courses on Thailands history, religious traditions, politics, anthropological and ethnic issues, and the fine arts.
All courses are taught in English. Participants can also propose subjects for independent research. For the academic year 2001-2002 the programs focus will be extended to the Southeast Asian region as a whole.
The Office of International Programs helps visiting students obtain an entry visa to Thailand and find accommodations. A program orientation covers the cross-cultural aspects of studying in Thailand.
