The Electronic Embassy, www.embassy.org/embassies/index.html, collects the home pages of all U.S.-based embassies. In addition to essential official information for travel (visas, etc.), many countries provide cultural and educational exchange information on their web sites.

GoAbroad.com, www.goabroad.com. A comprehensive and up-to-date education abroad web site with excellent search provisions.

Institute of International Education (IIE) publishes the most comprehensive data on study and work abroad programs. IIE Passport, www.iiepassport.org, is a user-friendly search engine which lets you find the program characteristics you're interested in, such as location and language of instruction. Includes the entire contents of the IIE books Academic Year Abroad and Vacation Study Abroad.

Language Course Finder, International Where+How, www.language-learning.net, includes some 6,000 listings of language courses worldwide. Searches possible on a variety of categories, in 20 languages.

Studyabroad.com, www.studyabroad.com, lists study abroad programs as well as special databases for language courses and internships/volunteer programs. Information limited to location and subject.

TransitionsAbroad.com, is unique in its coverage of all education abroad options, from study abroad to educational travel. Offers full and free access to its vast online database of annotated resources and first-hand reports compiled by international education specialists and program participants over the past 35 years.

Univ. of California-Irvine, International Opportunities Program, www.cie.uci.edu. Extensive directories (not databases) of study abroad, summer programs, internships, research, teaching, volunteering and work abroad programs with links to many other education abroad web sites.

Univ. of Michigan, International Center's Overseas Opportunities Office, internationalcenter.umich.edu/swt/index.html, by Transitions Abroad Work Abroad Editor William Nolting. Not a database, but a collection of outstanding articles, annotated links, and print resources for study, work, and travel abroad, including in-depth reports on work abroad options.

Univ. of Minnesota, Global Programs and Strategy Alliance, www.international.umn.edu, is a comprehensive website with outstanding search provisions and outstanding resources for study and travel abroad.

Worldwide Classroom, www.worldwide.edu, lists intensive language programs and programs suitable for K-12 students through adults. Includes a "Travel Planner" section offering lots of links. Web version of the International Study Telecom Directory.

World Wide Colleges and Universities, www.globaled.us/wwcu/, links to university and international office web sites. Organized by country.

National Consortium for Study in Africa, africa.isp.msu.edu/osafrica.htm, hosted by Michigan State University's African Studies Center, includes an extensive list of study abroad programs offered by U.S. institutions, with descriptions, contact information, and links for email and web sites. Excellent video on study in Africa available.

Univ. of Pennsylvania, African Studies, www.sas.upenn.edu/African_Studies/AS.html, has huge number of links to sites for African and African-American studies.

Association for Asian Studies, www.aasianst.org, is a professional association web site with a section on study abroad. Comprehensive links to other sites on all regions of Asia. It also offers a section on grants and fellowships.

Freeman Scholarships, www.iie.org/pgms/freeman-asia, offers scholarships for undergraduates with financial need to study in Asia. Apply online.

Australian Education Office, studyinaustralia.gov.au/Sia/en/Home.htm, is an officially-sponsored website that includes listings of study abroad programs (including U.S.-sponsored) at Australian universities.

Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and the NIS

American Association of Teachers of Slavic & East European Languages (AATSEEL), aatseel.org, a professional association web site which includes study abroad internships, scholarships and career information related to Central and East European Studies.

International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), www.irex.org, is a nonprofit organization which offers grants for study abroad in this region.

RussNet: The Russian Language Network, www.russnet.org, is a comprehensive resource for studying and working in Russia.

American-Scandinavian Foundation, www.amscan.org, includes a comprehensive directory of study, language, and work abroad programs in all Scandinavian countries, including U.S.-sponsored programs.

British Council USA - Study in the UK, www.studyintheuk.org, provides comprehensive official information on study, scholarships, internships, and working as a student in the U.K. See also British Information Services www.britainusa.org.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX), www.butex.ac.uk, has BUTEX's directories of undergraduate and graduate study programs in the U.K., which include most (but not all) U.K. universities.
