Student Work Abroad

Volunteer projects known as workcamps, which last two to four weeks, usually in the summer, and “pay” only room and board, provide invaluable opportunities for international experience. Hundreds are available, located in most European countries, as well as a few in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. You can work for social causes—unlikely as a paid job. And workcamps are group experiences, often with nearly every participant coming from a different country. The best time to apply is in early April, when you’ll have the greatest choice. Student status not required. Registration fees are typically around $200-$500 but much more for locations in Africa or Asia. Americans can register for workcamps. —Selected and reviewed by William Nolting, Manager of the University of Michigan Overseas Opportunities Office and International Educational Editor for Transitions Abroad. |
